Cub scouts communications

Tomorrow, my dad and I will be helping local cub scouts earn their Communications pin by demonstrating emergency communications using ham (amateur) radio.  I’ve got a ham radio that I’ve built into a metal case to make it portable, and my dad will be using it to show the cub scouts how to communicate after a storm, hurricane, or other disaster.

I’ll be talking remotely to the cubs, to demonstrate the other half of the communication, so it should be a fun day for these kids.

High-altitude balloon project

In late 2010, I decided I wanted to try the same thing I’d seen many times before online: launch a weather balloon, take high-altitude pictures, and retrieve those pictures.  With the help of Marc, I did just that one Saturday…

The tracking devices used didn’t quite work as planned, but it was a success nonetheless.  I plan to retry again in the future with more equipment, and with hopefully better results.
